What Did Former FDA Commissioner Jane Henney Say About DSHEA?
Former FDA Commissioner Henney testified before Congress in her confirmation hearings that:
I believe DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) provides FDA with the necessary legal authority to protect the public health
Dr. Henney has reaffirmed this view on numerous other occasions. FDA’s authority under the FDC Act as amended by DSHEA is backed up by the Federal Trade Commission’s authority to require that claims that are made for dietary supplements are substantiated by valid science. FDA’s former Commissioner, Dr. Jane Henney, and FDA’s Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Joe Levitt, both have repeatedly affirmed that ample authority exists to assure the safety of these products.
